Ebook About Half Broke Horses is Laura Ingalls Wilder for adults, as riveting and dramatic as Isak Dinesen’s Out of Africa or Beryl Markham’s West with the Night. Destined to become a classic, it will transfix readers everywhere.“Those old cows knew trouble was coming before we did.” So begins the story of Lily Casey Smith, Jeannette Walls’s no-nonsense, resourceful, and spectacularly compelling grandmother. By age six, Lily was helping her father break horses. At fifteen, she left home to teach in a frontier town—riding five hundred miles on her pony, alone, to get to her job. She learned to drive a car and fly a plane. And, with her husband, Jim, she ran a vast ranch in Arizona. She raised two children, one who is Jeannette’s memorable mother, Rosemary Smith Walls, unforgettably portrayed in The Glass Castle. Lily survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and the most heartbreaking personal tragedy. She bristled at prejudice of all kinds—against women, Native Americans, and anyone else who didn’t fit the mold. Rosemary Smith Walls always told Jeannette that she was like her grandmother, and in this true-life novel, Jeannette Walls channels that kindred spirit. Half Broke Horses is Laura Ingalls Wilder for adults, as riveting and dramatic as Isak Dinesen’s Out of Africa or Beryl Markham’s West with the Night. J.Walls is an excellent writer, best book Glass Castle, but this is a close second. If I were reading again I would read this before Glass Castle.Lily Casey Smith was a true woman to be looked up to...She grew up on ranches, training horses but realized as she got older that she would not inherit the ranch as a brother would but she let nothing get her down and found her way through life. "One door closes, another opens"Walls keeps you reading from the first page. I learned so much about ranching in different places, women's place in society there, Indian information etc but in no way is this a boring information book. I cannot say enough about it. Please read! I read Half Broke Horses when it first was released and enjoyed it. Then my book club just selected it so decided to read it again.Lily Casey, the main character, is a strong willed woman (not a lady). She lived her earlier life on a ranch doing whatever had to be done. She loathed people who couldn't stand on their own two feet, who slacked their duties, lied or cheated. She freely admits when she made errors in life and was determined to never make the same error again. She also tried to not have her children make those errors. She taught school but lectured her kids. The book grabs the reader from the beginning and doesn't let go. As the reader, I was beside Lily when things were occurring. My only criticism is the book just drops off after the marriage of her daughter. Lily was the author's grandmother so she could have at least a detailed chapter with Lily's relationship with her grandchildren.
